For Those heading to University, perhaps never thought of what you would need to get by each day when you are not in campus.
Living outside home maybe a first to some people, and some mums will be in hand to help you sort all that out and will be with them all the way until you had enough.
These are just a thought to help those who does not have the privilege to get all the help. This might give some inspiration onto what you actually need to do when you have a look around the dorm or accommodation.
Some student live in a dorm and some prefer outside accommodation. Both place need some serious consideration.
First you would need to consider are :
1. Cabinets and drawers space allocation.
2. Fridge and freezer.
3. Cooker ( gas and or electric )
4. Oven.
5. What available from the dorm or what the landlord provide as small kitchen appliances.
1. Cabinets / Drawers.
Thinking about your these will be biggest reason what essential you can put in. Mainly I would suggest you start with all Tin/ Can food. Dried ingredients can also stored for long time as long as temperature in that area re reasonable not warm then should keep your stuff long lasting.
2. Fridge and freezer.
If you have allocated space in fridge and freezer then use it to put your fresh ingredients or something you would need in short period.
3. Cooker.
You need to start thinking what kind of food you would likely to cook or make most of your days when you stay there. It is easy when you are thinking about going back home to your parents. Some are not so keen and might even prefer to do holiday work etc while they have their days off.
If you do think that you would cook a lot then gas hob always the best. It cook food faster than using electric hob. Electric hob useful when u are making siple cooking.
I dont mind using electric when i am stuck with option, all I do is blast the temp so I can cook faster when I was hungry.
4. Oven.
You like simple baking or making your own pie or heating up the oven chips or any ready meals food then this is great. Stew or caserolle also excellent using oven.
5. Small Appliances.
You need to know what the landlord provide for small items other than the gas hob or fridge are stuff like I mention below :
- Microwave
- Kettle
- Toaster
- Hand blender
- etc
with microwave ( oven ) will be great if a place do not have oven. It is unusual if a place ( houses / accomodations ) do not have oven unless it is small dormitories.
Kettle is a quick fix to make your potted soup or noodles also make your cuppa.
Toaster not just making your toast in the morning. you can buy sandwich bags to toast your sandwich too.
Hand blender really useful to make smoothies or blend your morning juice. which ever you want to do for healthy food.
All these are base on you have your own space. It is different when you have to start thinking of sharing your room or kitchen with few others who might not have use the space or using the space but do not take you into consideration.
Politic of living like this will be your lesson how you manged your own life and stuff. At the end of the day you at dont want to waste your life by having to cook when you are really tired after being in campus all day listening to few lecturers. Give yourself a treat once in a while by having a good healthy takeaway. Why not. Enjoy your food. Be safe and make good choices.
